Early construction input will be provided during the Planning and Preliminary Engineering Phase. Constructability is the optimization of the engineering, procurement and construction functions to improve the project delivery process and is a major contributor to project cost and schedule effectiveness. The effective process of integrating construction knowledge and experience into conceptual design, procurement, detailed engineering and field operations provides the opportunity to reduce costs, minimize engineering rework and improve project schedules.

Early construction input will be provided during the Planning and Preliminary Engineering Phase. During the Planning and Preliminary Engineering Phase and continuing into the detailed engineering and construction phase, the following project elements will be reviewed as part of constructability program:

• Incorporation of safety considerations in the design
• Site plan and site access
• Simplifying and standardizing design to reduce complexity
• Typical design details and standard specifications
• Methods to reduce quantities
• Use of precast concrete
• Pre-assembly and pre-fabrication strategies
• Scoping of Engineering Work Packages to suit construction sequence and subcontracting strategy
• Temporary Facilities and Utilities. Opportunities to maximize the early use of permanent facilities such as service buildings, warehouses, electrical generators, septic systems, water systems etc., to minimize costs of temporary construction facilities, will be investigated
• Schedule optimization
• Pre-operational testing plan
• Drawing and specification reviews
• Establishing the detailed sequence of deliveries to the field for major bulk materials and equipment
